Warren 74 74 1900 - 1958 Alexander Lusk Warren 58 58      Apprently Alec, as he was known, wasn't much of a family man.  Estelle Warren once said she never heard him say a kind word about his wife, Mayme.
His son, Alexander J. Warren aka Bill, once suggested that his dad seemed almost afraid of buying a home.  They always rented and had chances of purchasing but Alec always backed away.
Bill remembers when there were scuffles in the neighborhood with other boys his father would threaten to beat him, and I suppose his brother, if he didn't go out and fight.
On his death bed Alec told Bill that he was the best of the boys.  Also, he seemed to have no regrets about his life saying he always had a good time.
Reportedly Alec was a womanizer.  He frequently would go to Louisville to watch baseball.  He had a burbon most every evening.

It appears that Andrew was living with his nephew ?, George and George's wife, Nora, in 1910, perhaps because of old age.  Whether Andrew was George's Uncle or a brother is not substantiated.

Hi Rod (email 6/17/02)

My husband, Fred, is looking forward to communicating with you and may be able to share memories, etc. I'm the genealogist and I'll be able to provide names, dates and places. What I may try to do is pull together a Waddell gedcom file for you. I do want to review what I have in the file first. My work on it is sporadic, to say the least. We were in Covington in October and I want to make sure everything was entered. Roy Raymond's father was Ambrose. He is also buried with his first wife (Fannie Lewis) in Highland Cemetery (Section 4, Lot 155, Grave 6). Ambrose did not have a gravestone, so Fred arranged to have one laid just before we were last there. We are attempting to find more info on Ambrose and his ancestors, but are dead-ending.

We are in touch with only one other member of the family, Herb Reinhard, who is Virginia's son. I'll forward your message and the picture to him also.

It's great to talk with another member of the clan. I'll forward what I can as soon as I can. By the way, you're living in one of my favorite places. I lived in Green Bay in the early to mid-70s, after going to high school and college in Marquette, Michigan.

6/17/2002 email from Fred Waddell:
You are correct, that grandpa Roy Raymond Waddell was a carpenter by trade, if and when he worked, but was an alcoholic, and all of the 9 children (Albert died as an infant) lived in abject poverty. My dad, Charles, only had 5 years of schooling, as probably was about the same for many of them.

_The picture attached was an attachment to your note on the St. Paul's note. I'll get the gedcom file and a scanned copy of Ambrose's wedding certificate to you early next week. We're heading to Maryland tomorrow to see our kids and 2 grandkids--one of which just came home from the hospital. He was born in mid-April, 7 weeks premature, so it's time to go see him.

I'll see what other birth/death certificates I can scan in. Right now I'm working with just a printer/scanner so I can do only paper documents. Last night I was looking at Roy Raymond's death certificate. It was very sad to see the cause of death--dehydration and inanition (?) due to severe malnutrition. We're assuming that this was a result of the alcoholism. Very sad.

Before you head to Kentucky and after I send the gedcom file, let's get our heads together so you won't be going over the same ground that may have been covered already.

Have a good weekend. Bev

Hi Rod,
Bev is sending you info regarding Roy Sr. Waddell's siblings. You know, since our correspondence, Bev and I looked at the records again, and noted that Roy Sr. had died of malhutrition, and my father, Charles (his son) was the one to sign off on the death certificate. It is hard to imagine, and bothers me, that our grandfather, Roy Sr. died of nutrition. No one should have to die that way, but alcoholism, very often results in chronic malnutirtion, as you know. I think of this, and my Dad's life. They were so very poor. I can remember stories of my dad that bean soup and corn break was the only thing they had to eat during the entire day, and it was my dad's responsibility, and perhaps the responsibility of his brothers and sisters to pick up coal thrown down from the trains. The firemen on the trains took pity on them and threw off blocks of coal that they used to heat their house. So hard to imagine, and so very sad. Perhaps it accounts for why I can't ever remember ha! ving any contact with my grandmother or grandfather Waddell.
Bev and I leave tomorrow morning for Maryland to see our kids and grandkids. Will return on Sunday evening.
Take care of yourself,
till later!

Hi,
the familyname REIS comes from the "Mittelhochdeutsch" - this was the language spoken about the 12th century and at this time the name was "RIS" and means the area near a river. If you want, I can send you some about the name and the first time using in Germany. RAIS om Franconia - but only in Franconia - was an ordinary soldier in the 15th century. Best regards Gerhard Reiss from Bavaria/Germany.

Earlier in this forum (14 SEP 1999) Barbara Doll wrote (which I did not know and find very interesting):

"My information is that the name "Reis", which is the same root as the word for travel, trip or traveller, originated in Middle German as the name for a knight, who would obviously be one of the few in society who would actually make a trip or take a journey. In theory, the knights may have been the group who introduced the grain "rice" to the population. The grain also goes by the same name, "reis". "

History of Hamilton County Ohio
CHAPTER XX CIVIL LIST OF HAMILTON COUNTY

The subject of this sketch, Jacob Ries (deceased), of St. Bernard, was born in Germany in 1822. He came to the United States in 1841, coming direct to Cincinnati. In 1856 he moved to St. Bernard. Here he was actively engaged in business up to his death, which occurred in 1880. He was a man liked by all for his uprightness and honorable dealings. He took an active part in the building up of St. Bernard. He died respected and loved by a host of friends. He was an active member of the Catholic church. Thus passed away a kind father and a loving husband, leaving a wife and five children to mourn his loss. He was married in Cincinnati in 1848 to Elizabeth Morio, who came to Cincinnati with her father, Michael Morio, his wife and four children.

In 1949, I met a Presbyterian minister (turned Episcopalian) by the name of Lusk in Ridgefield, CT, who was born in Northern Ireland. He claimed that the Lusks in Ireland were descended from a Viking pirate shipwrecked off the coast of Ireland. There may be some basis for his claim, as I later visited the tiny farming village of Lusk, just outside of Dublin, in 1985. A plaque on the side of a Norman tower there said it was used by the villagers as a refuge from Viking raiders centuries earlier.

I checked the 1900 census for SAL & ANNIE WILSON and they are not there in Muhlenberg.
Being their oldest son was 11 years old in the 1910 census I assume they married about 1897/99,They may have been married and lived in a nearby county from 1897-1910 since they are not found in 1900 census

Well as you may know not all census takers were handwriting experts so lots of info is incorrect when dealing with numbers,

The info was provided by ANNIE AND SAL so I assume they knew how old they were.

She born in 1882 plus 27 yrs makes her age in 1910 to be 28 so its possible she had not had her birthdate before the census was taken

He born in 1872 should be 37 yrs old in 1910
Possibly a mistake in transcription of the mircofilm or an error by census taker

Migrated to Virginia
1604 - 1677 Thomas Warren 73 73 Thomas Waren secured passage to Virginia by becoming an indentrued servant of the Greenleafe's and is listed as such on one of th logs.

Virginia land patent records of 1635 show that Thomas and Susan Warren, "relict of Robert Greenleafe", were deeded 300 acres of land between them.

Thomas immigrated to Virginia and married Susan Greenleafe.  Susan came to America in 1620 aboard The Jonathan with her children, Thomas, age 3, and Ann, age 22 weeks.  Susan was 23 years old.  Thomas and Susan were married in 1634.  In 1635 he patented 300 acres of land in Charles City Co., VA.  Part was in Susan's name for her personal adventure  and part was for her former husband, Robert Greenleafe, being an ancient planter in the time of Sir Thomas Dale and the remainder in being due to Thomas for his personal adventure and transportation of tow persons into Virginia, John Fooke and Ruth Whitfield.

Thomas Warren, 300 acres, Chas City Co., Nov. 20, 1635, pg. 314.   South upon Bayliffs-East upon the main woods, west upon the River, and north upon Four Mile Creek.  150 acres in right of his wife kSusan Greeneleafe, the relict of Robert Greeneleafe, 50 acres due for her per ad and 100 for said Robert, her former husband, being an Ancient Planter in the time of Sir Thomas Dale, 50 acres due said Warren for his own per adventure and 100 acres for the transportation of two servants, John Fouke, and Richard Whifield.

Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666---1635, Robert Greenleaf, Susan Greenleaf by Thomas Warren of Charles City, VA.

On the History of Cheshire we have a Thomas Warren, child of Edward Warren and Susan Boothe, that was buried December 1677 at Prestbury, England and died Sandbach.

Speaking for myself I believe all is in agreement with Thomas Markham
being the husband of Mrs. Susan Greenleafe.  If anyone disagrees let it be known.

Message from Carol Warren on: Susan Greenleafe?? .... Carol Warren

Dear Norma ........

Thank you for all your messages!

Regarding the confusion as to who Susan Greenleafe married.  I do have a note in my files from the last time I spoke with Wilma Warren Raysin.  Wilma told me that there was an article in a Virginia genealogy publication a few years ago which discounted the Thomas Warren-Susan Greenleafe relationship.  I'll look for that reference tomorrow and will get back in touch.

Do notice in the Thomas Markham references I sent you that it shows Thomas Markham married to "Susan the relict of Robert Greenleafe" on 11 July 1636 .... then the following year, on 11 July 1637, there is another reference to Thomas Markham's "wife Susan Markham, the relict of Robert Greenleafe".  So we have two references showing Susan as Thomas Markham's wife.

The reference for Thomas Warren on 20 Nov. 1635 states the land he received was "S. upon Bayliffs  _______  (Bailey's Creek - L.H.F.)"  The L.H.F. initials are those of Louise Pledge Heath Foley, compiler of the book "Early Virginia Families along the James River, Their Deep Roots and Tangled Branches, Henrico County-Goochland County, Virginia" Volume I.  This lady has written several books on Virginia records, however, I'm not certain exactly what her sources were.

Then .... the reference for Thomas Markham, 11 July 1636, states "S. upon Curles joyning upon Baylys land".

Thomas Markham on 11 July 1637 again claimed land "S. upon Curles joyning upon Baylys land".

I think we have enough evidence to show that there truly was an error in an early transcribing on the 1635 record and that it should have said "Thomas Markham", not
"Thomas Warren".  Also, realistically, I don't think proper women in those early days jumped from one man to another so quickly!!

One last thing on this subject.  I may have mentioned this before, however, a few years ago, I did receive an e-mail from a woman associated with an early Virginia settlers organization (I'm still looking for those papers! ... surely they're filed here someplace!!).  When I originally wrote to this organization, I mentioned "Thomas Warren and Susan Greenleafe" ... when she responded to me, she wrote "Thomas Markham and Susan Greenleafe"!!

I do agree with you, Norma, that although there was a Thomas Warren, he obviously was not married to Susan Greenleafe.

I too graduated from the University of Kentucky after having spent 3 years in the Army, worked in Washington, D.C. for a short while before getting my Masters Degree at Kansas State. Worked for quite a few more years before returning for my doctorate at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Taught at UW-Stout while finishing my dissertation, and met Beverly,my wife there. I had been married before for 12 years, divorced with two children from my first marriage, but none from my marriage with Bev. My children, Kristin, age 35 and son Todd, age, 31 live and work in the Washington, D.C. area. My son Todd, works at American University in the International Studies division as a Program Coordinator and is finishing his MBA at night.

My father was a successful real estate broker in Northern Kentucky until the gambling bug literally destroyed his life (and that of his family). I have a sister, Linda Kopp who lives in Leesburg, FL just north of Orlando.
Well enough for now. Must go; hope to hear more from you!
Till later!

Hi Rod,
Bev is sending you info regarding Roy Sr.
Take care of yourself,
till later!

_FA1  PLAC 3rd Earl of Derby.  Acceded: Bef 1160. Also Earl Ferrers.  Lord of Tutbury.

_FA5  PLAC Capitulated to the king & forfeited Tutbury & Duffield, which were destroyed.Ther e is substantial confusion over his name. See The Complete Peerage V4.p193 for an account. Pe rsonally, I feel there could have been two brothers, William and Robert. Robert being the Ear l and when he died at Acre his nephew William son of his brother William suceeded, but no doc uments support this theory either!
