John W.? was born in 1834 in Pitts. Co., Virginia.1 John W.?'s father was Josiah Maples and his mother was Ruthea Sweeney. His paternal grandfather was William Maples; his maternal grandparents were Moses SR. Sweeney and Ann (Sweeney). He had nine brothers and three sisters, named James, Ephraim, Josiah Jr., William Cordra, Peter C., Moses, Elijah, Jesse, Thomas, Nancy, Ruthea and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the thirteen children.
