      David Ellis Powell an his wife, Lucinda Shoemaker Powell, were born in Mercer County, Ken tucky.  He was born in 1805, the fifth child of Charles Powell, Jr. and Leah Goldman. Lucind a was born in 1810 to James Shoemaker and Sally Taylor.  James Shoemaker died and Sally Shoem aker married Allen Davis in 1823.
       A story handed down through the family says David Powell found Lucinda crying by a sprin g, abandoned by her family.  David Powell and Lucinda Shoemaker were married October 10, 1825 .  Lucinda's step-father, Allen Davis, and her mother, "The Widow Sally Shoemaker", signed pe rmission for her to marry.  Lucinda's name is spelled "Lewcindy" on these two papers indicati ng she was known by her family as Lucindy.
       On the 1830 Mercer County census David is listed in the Forkland community along Rollin g Fork River in southern Mercer County.  His brother Lewis Jr. is living next door and Henr y and Sally Taylor, his sister, are only six listings above.
       Family tradition says David Powell received his Doctor training in Mercer County.  Dr. N elson Crane, a relative by marriage of David's brother Cyrus, could possibly be the Doctor Da vid trained with.
       David and Lucinda had three children born in Kentucky according to the 1850 Schuyler Cou nty census:  Mary (1830), Matilda (1832), and Emeline (1834).  Sometime between 1834 and 183 7 David followed his brother Henry to northern Missouri where he and his family are listed o n the 1840 Macon County census.  Six more children were born in Missouri: Sarah Catherine (18 37), Palina Ann (1840), Martha (1841), Thursa Frances (1845), Thomas Jefferson (1847), and Ge orge Washington (1850).  Lucinda had three children that died as infants.
       David Powell owned at least 200 acres in western Schuyler County, Missouri, about two mi les above the present town of Downing.  By 1859 David and Lucinda had sold all this land and , with his brother James Walton Powell and family, moved by wagon to Collin County, Texas.
       Five single children and two married daughters and their husbands also accompanied the P owell family to Collin County.  The single children were Palina, Martha, Frances, Thomas, an d George.  One of the married daughters was Polly (Mary) Powell Mallone and her husband, Will iam Elliott Mallone.  This couple brought with them three young sons, David Powell, John T. , and William Elliott, Jr.  The other married daughter was Sarah Powell Hart and her husband , the Rev. Henry T. Hart.  Another married daughter, Matilda Powell Pell and he husband, Jame s Pell, joined the family in Texas prior to 1870.
       David settled on Honey Creek near Cottage Hill, Texas.  The first record of land ownersh ip for David Powell in Collin County is 232 acres bought from J. D. Brown for $1000, May 17 , 1860.  James W. Powell also bought land out of the same track.  David owned a couple othe r small tracts adjoining this land.  He paid taxes on eight horses but paid a poll tax only o nce.

       In 1867, James W. Powell sold 99 acres to his son-in-law, T. B. Culwell.  By 1870, Jame s W. and his younger children had moved back to northern Missouri.  His daughter Lucinda Elle n and her husband Samuel Boone Bradley, and probably his son Charles Powell and family remain ed in Texas.
       Three of David Powell's  children remained in Collin County throughout their lives:  Wil liam E. and Polly Mallone,  James and Matilda Pell, and Thomas J. and Alice Miller Powell.  T he census listings clearly show David and Lucinda had several people living with them.  In 18 70 their widowed daughter, Martha Alexander, and her son John are in the household along wit h another grandson, Thomas Dyer, and a widowed neighbor, Aunt Betsy Jones, whom the Powell' s took in when she had no place to go.  David and Lucinda Powell surely were very kind hearte d and generous.
       W. Garland Button told a humorous story about Aunt Betsy.  In the Powell home, Aunt Bets y was sitting peacefully by the fire dipping snuff with a bonnet on her head.  Suddenly a car riage came up the lane and stopped before the house.  Aunt Betsy, excited at the thought of c ompany arriving, arose hastily from her chair and threw her bonnet in the fire and spat her s nuff in the middle of the feather bed!
       The 1870 census also lists James Pell age 42, Matilda age 38, and children Lucinda, ag e 16, William age 13, Sarah age 6, and Luvena age 3; Geroge W. Powell age 19, Virginia age 18 , and King 8 months; Henry Hart, Sarah age 32, and Alice age 3.  In 1880 Thomas J. Powell, hi s wife Alice and children David Ellis and Jo Ann as well as Thomas Dyer age 18, and Betsy Jon es are listed with David Powell.  William Pell age 23 is listed with his wife Martha age 19 a nd his children James and Lydia along with his mother, Matilda age 47 Widow.  James Pell, Mat ilda's husband, must have died after 1870.
       Mr. Button also wrote:  During the War Between the States, Dr. Powell was for a time th e only physician in Collin County.  He faithfully ministered to all and did the best a physic ian of that day could do within the limitations of medical science of that time.  I was tol d he was a beloved and revered figure as he ministered to the people to the best of his abili ty.  Dr. Powell and Lucinda lived at the Honey Creek homestead until he died in September, 18 93, while visiting their daughter, Palina Powell Dyer and her family in Montaghue County, Tex as. He is buried in the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Montaghue County.  Lucinda Shoemaker Powel l died march 27, 1895 and is buried at Cottage Hill cemetery near their Honey Creek homestea d where they first settled in Collin County in 1859.  William E. Mallone and Polly Powell Mal lone are also buried in the Cottage Hill cemetery along with several other relatives of Davi d and Lucinda Powell.
