Anthony Gholson is the first well documented Gholson yet found in the country that was to bec ome America. The first record of Anthony is inSpotsylvania County Virginia in 1725 when he p urchased 200 acres of land. In 1728, Anthony received a Land Grand for 1000 acres of land o n Terry's Run in Spotsylvania County Virginia from King George the Second. Anthony sold thi s 1000 acres to three different people in 1734. Anthony and his family apparently prospere d in Virginia which during their lifetime was a British Colony. In 1763, the year before h e died and when he was 83 years old, he made deeds of gifts leaving a considerable amount o f land and personal property and at least ten slaves to various relatives.
Anthony Gholson Sr. The first record found of Anthony Gholson Sr. (Golson, Gholston, Golsan ) is his purchase of 200 acres on the south side Holloday Swamp, Saint Geroge Parish, Spotsyl vania County, VA in 1725. He received a 1000 acre land grant on Terrys Run on Sept. 28, 1728 . His sons, Anthony Jr. & William each received 500 acres at the same time. Anthony Sr. marri ed Jane before 1739. 23 July 1763, Anthony signed a deed of gift conveying to his son William a Negro man named To m, a Negro boy named Little Tom and a feather bed and its furniture; to Anthony Tholson a Neg ro man named Bob and a Negro boy named Cupit and a feather bed and its furniture; to his daug hter, Eliza. Rice a Negro woman named Venus, a Negro girl named Mary; to daughter Lucy Step , he lent a Negro woman named Philles and a Negro girl named Creece, to be for Lucy's use fo r her lifetime and then they and their increase to be divided among Lucy's children, also t o Lucy a feather bed and its furniture; and to granddaughter Jane Pollard a Negro girl name d Sarah. The deed was witnessed by Robt. Sharman, William Cave and Benjamin Cave and was prov ed in Orange County court 28 July 1763.
8 August 1763, Anthony signed a deed giving to son Jon Gholson a lot of land bought from Nath aniel Geer, a Negro wench named Judy, a Negro boy named Ben, all of his horses and cattle an d all other remainder of his estate with the transfer to take place after the death of Anthon y and Jane. The deed was witnessed by Roger Bell, John Oakes and Ambrose Smith and was prove n in court 25 August 1763.
3 December 1764, Jane Gholson signed a deed granting to her son John for her lifetime the sla ves Tom, Bob, Venus, Phillis, Judey, Creece, Ben, Little Tom, Cupid, Mary and Billy, all of w hich had been left to her by her late husband Anthony for her lifetime. After her death, th e slaves were to be returned to the other children. Witnessed by Robt. Johnson, Nat. Geer an d Elizabeth Geer. Proven in court 5 April 1765. Linda Kay Gholson Hoffines says Jean Tallife rro married in 1703 in Scotland John Craig, b. 1650, d. 1705 in Scotland). Soon after John Cr aig's death, Jean joined her brothers, Robert Talliferro (1633-1700) and John Talliferro, i n Virginia and gave birth there to her son Talliferro Craig. Mrs. Hoffines says it is possibl e Jean became the second wife of Anthony Gholson and the mother of John Gholson. Tolivar, th e Americanized version of Talliferro, appears several times in the Gholson family.
Citing "Golsan, Golson, Gholson, Gholston Families in America," by Black and "Gholson and All ied Families" by Virginia Baker Mitchell, Michael Mathis reports that both of these writers b elieve Anthony Gholson is descended from the relatives of Dr. Theodore Goulston of England, w ho was a stockholder of the Virginia Company. Dr. Theodore Goulst on did not have children. H e was born 1572 in Wymondham, Leic., died 1632. He was physician of the Virginia Company an d married Helen Southerton. Virginia Baker Mitchell states that she believes John Gholson (sp elled Gunston) is a possible brother of Dr. Theodore Goulston and that Anthony is related t o this John, maybe his father. She also wondered what happened to the shares he owned in th e Virginia Company, but Michael Mathis says the Virginia Company was dissolved about 1622 an d everyone lost his investment, so no shares were valid.
