Nellie Mae POWELL 
Nellie Mae was born on June 30th, 1885 in Butler, Bates County, Missouri.1 Nellie Mae's father was John William POWELL and her mother was Linnie Humphrus. Her paternal grandparents were John L. POWELL and Sarah Kiff. She had a brother named William Harvey. She was the older of the two children. She had three half-brothers named John Henry, Richard Wymbern and Clarence Wilmot. She died at the age of 91 on January 24th, 1977 in Baxter Springs, Cherokee Co., Kansas. She was buried in Rocky Comfort Cemetery, Rocky Comfort, MO.2 1 General Notes

Dear Sisters:
Talking about horses, I grew up with horses and mules.
My family moved from Rich Hill, MO to Mc Elhaney.
Granddad John Powell had a lease on a farm. We all lived
here a few years. Granddad was raising a pair of young
mules named Pete and Barney. One early March day he hooked
the mules to a covered wagon and left for the oilfields.
In October he returned with a string of horses and mules.
The first year he had a little race mare, a real beauty.
Well, for thirteen years my Granddad made the oilfields in
summer, feeding stock in winter. He saved his money,
bought eighty acres, fenced it with 4 strand barbed wire.
His last trip in the covered wagon, he picked me up at
Goodman. We stopped at McNatt, had lunch from his
cupboard. We made it to the farm three miles west of
Ridgley. I spent two months with Uncle Harvey, Aunt Dolly
and cousins Delcie and Jack (Wim). Before I went home
