TITL Descents from Antiquity AUTH The Augustan Society Chris Bennett (cbennett@@nospam.com) w rites: The Augustan DFA charts show lines from the 17th Egyptian dynasty to the eval Englis h kings. There are no "proven" descents going over that period. There are two major proble m with the DFA charts: (1) they don't distinguish between proven descents and hypothetica l ones, giving the uninitiated the impression that this is all proven material, and (2) ther e is no bibliography so you can't follow up on it [one was intended but the Augustans never g ot around to publishing it.] The hypotheses used are not always the best ones -- in many ca ses they are very old and IMO certainly wrong -- but they are not fantasies, the ones I hav e identified (mostly in the earlier sections) are always the results of someone's serious sch olarship. Stewart Baldwin (sbald@@auburn.campus.mci.net) arites: There are a number of Descent s from Antiquity charts floating around, and the answer to your question depends on which lin e you are interested in and what you want to know about it. If you want a well documented ge neration-by-generation descent from antiquity, then the answer is that none of the charts pur porting to give such a descent are valid. Depending on which claim for descent from antiquit y you are talking about, the assessment would generally range from plausible (but definitel y unproven) to completely absurd. Book PAGE chart X
