William was born after 1732 in Spotsylvania Co., Va..1 William's father was Anthony Gholson and his mother was Mary Sandridge. His paternal grandparents were Anthony GHOLSON SR. and Jane Hawkins; his maternal grandparents were William SANDRIDGE and Ann PULLIAM PULLAM. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named Anthony, Frederick, John, John, Joseph, Dabney, William, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Elizabeth, Eunice and Susannah. He was the second oldest of the fourteen children.-
