Richard LEE 
Richard was born on August 18th, 1691 in Ditchley, Northumberland Co, VA.1 Richard's father was Hancock LEE and his mother was Mary KENDALL. His paternal grandparents were Richard II LEE and Anna Constable; his maternal grandparents were William KENDALL and Susannah BAKER. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, Kendall and Anna. He was the youngest of the four children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Issac, John, Hanacock and Elizabeth Leigh. He died at the age of 49 in 1740 in Ditchley, Northumberland Co, VA. He was buried in 1740 in Ditchley, Northumberland Co, VA.1 1 General Notes

GIVN RichardSURN LEENSFX (of Ditchley)Listed in Lees of Virginia by Paul C Nagel as Hancock L ee's oldestson;however another source lists a William born first.Richard supposedly had 7 chi ldren by his wife Judith Steptoe,according toC Lee, (Prodigy) and Lee Chronicle; Studies of t he Early Generationsofthe Lees of Virginia by Cazenove Gardner lee, Jr, NY University Press,1 957.According to the Lee Chonicle, much controversy and research has beenputinto dispelling t he belief that Capt Thomas is a son of Richard.Accordingly, two other children (the remainin g 2 of the 7) have beendetermined, as well. Only 5 children (Kendall, Elizabeth, Mary, Judith andLettice) were mentioned in his will but the administrative records ofhisestate show that h e had 2 additional children. The research of 2genealogists in 1929 turned up Anne, who marrie d Edward Kerr andsettledin Isle of Wight County, Va as one of the 2 missing children. Theothe rchild was later determined to be a Stephen Lee of Kentucky who wasresearched extensively b y Cazenove Lee in the 1920's. Cazenove putthisbelief aside when word came from a Alabama lad y who claimed CaptThomasLee of Lee Valley, TN, a Revolutionary Soldier was the son of Richard Lee.According to her, the Bible record read, "Thomas Lee, son of RichardLeeand Judith Stepto e Lee, was born at Ditchley, Northumberland Co, VA,December 3, 1739." This seemed reasonabl e evidence but in 1951 MrsRobertM Templeton, genealogist for the Lee Society reopened the cas e ofStephenLee. One deciding factor in determining Stephen's kinship to RichardLeewas the fac t that Judith Steptoe Lee was the daughter of AnthonySteptoeand Lucy Stephen. Judith and Rich ard's first son was named Kendallafterhis paternal grandmother so it seemed logical to nam e a second sonafterhis maternal grandmother. Though Stephen was not named in the willcouldb e attributed to his earlier financial assistance received from hisfatherindicated by his marr ying young and buying large tracts of land inFairfaxat an early age.There still remained th e controversy over Capt. Thomas Lee. In May1952 aletter from Mr. W.F Franke of Birmingham def inately eliminated Thomasas ason of Richard. He was doubtful of the declared relationship bet weenThomas and Richard, and being also a descendant of Thomas purchasedthecontroversial Bible . Upon examination it was found the entriesregardingThomas had been added later from hazy mem ory and wishful thinking. MrFranke also established through documentary proof in the NC Court Recordsof 1768, that Thomas was the son of a John Lee whose will was probatedlater that sam e year.
