  Notes for Charles Smith Alden:
  Charles moved to Fulton Co. in 1842 with his parents. In 1864, he enlisted in the Union Arm y and served with Company H in the Illinois 32 Infantry. He mustered in Oct. 4th, 1864. He wa s mustered out September 16, 1864 at Leavenworth, Kansas. Following the war he settled on 8 0 acres in Section 18, Fulton Co where he had a farm. Charles and Mary were married by A.C. P ace.He was Township Clerk, School Director, and Highway Commissioner, a member of the Moder n Woodmen of America (Camp 503 in Prairie City, Il). Charles was also a Commander of the Cart er Van Vleck chapter of the Bushnell Grand Army of the Republic. In 1902, Charles moved fro m the farm to Bushnell, to 205 Harris Avenue.  Charles was buried in Bushnell cemetery follow ing a funeral at Bushnell Methodist church. Rev. J.W. Ferris of Abingdon presiding, assiste d by Rev. D.F. Wilson. Charles' wife, Mary, and son, George, are also buried with Charles i n Bushnell cemetery.
  
  Charles' Manley farm was located at what is now the intersection of Route 9 and Manley Road , just north and east of Bushnell in Fulton County. The is nothing on the site now but farmla nd. Charles' brother and father originally had adjoining property at this site with Charles ' being across the street to the south of Smiths. When Smith passed away, Charles sold the pr operty and moved onto  his father's land.
  
  Following is some of the history of the Ill. 32nd Infantry during Charles' time in the Compan y:
  
  During November, 1864, the men whose term of sevice had expired were discharged and sent home . Colonel Logan and Lieutenant Colonel English were ordered to Louisville on court-martial du ty, and the command devolved upon Major Davidson. On the 13th, the Regiment fired their stock ade and quarters at Big Shanty, and began the "March to the Sea," having been transferred t o the Third Brigade (Belknap) Fourth Division (Giles A. Smith) Blair's Seventeenth Army Corps . Reached Monticello the 20th, and the Oconee River the 26th, where a sharp skirmish took pla ce, with considerable artillery firing. November 30, reached Ogeechee River. Distance travele d from Big Shanty, 300 miles.
  
  December 1, crossed Ogeechee River and destroyed the railroad. 10th, encountered enemy five m iles from Savannah and drove him two miles. Here endured a sever fire from the heavy guns o f the city defenses, by which Captain Lawson and four men were wounded. Shifted to the righ t and skirmished in face of severe artillery fire. December 16, moved to King's Bridge on Oge echee River, and on the 18th received supplies from the fleet, having been on scant rations , and some days without food since the 8th. At 2 p.m., on the 19th, moved toward a rebel for t in front, and fortified within 300 yards under heavy fire. Ordered to assault on the 21st m when it was discovered that the enemy had evacuated. Entered Savannah at 11 a.m., having ma rched 100 miles during the month. Reviewed by General Sherman on the 29th.  Major Davidson re signed and command devolved upon Captain Rider.
  
  January 5, 1865, embarked at Thunderbolt Inlet on U.S. gunboat "Winona" and disembarked at Be aufort, S.C., the 7th.
  
  February 1, began marching into South Carolina. On the 3d, forced the Salkahatchie, wading th e stream and backwaters, two miles wide, in ice cold water, varying from two to five feet i n depth, engaging in a sharp skirmish on reaching solid ground. 12th, reached the North Edist o River, and forced a passage as at the Salkehatchie, under a severe artillery fire, makin g a way for the direct column to enter Orangeburg. 16th, reached the Congaree River, and expe rienced slight loss by rebel sharpshooters in the outskirts of Colunbia on the opposite bank . 17th, a company of the Thirteenth Iowa, and Company C, Thirty-second Ill., crossed the rive r in scows. The flag of the former was displayed from the state house and that of the Thirty- second from the town hall by Adjutant Hedley. A pair of rebel colors were brought away by th e latter command.
  
  March 3, arrived at Cheraw; 13th at Fayettsville, N.C., where a portion of the Regiment skirm ished with the enemy. Was engaged at Bentonville on the 21st, five companies in skirmish lin e losing severely. Captain Dunn, who led the skirmishers, was warmly complimented by Genera l Belknap for gallantry in this affair.
  
  March 22, reached Goldsboro, where Lieutenant Colonel English assumed command.
  
  April 13, reached Releigh and remained in the vicinity until Johnson's surrender. 28th, trans ferred to Second Brigade, Brigadier General Stalbrand.  29th, marched north via Petersburg, R ichmond and Alexandria to Washington and participated in the grand review May 24.
  
  June 6, moved westward by rail to Parkersburg, Va., thence by boat to Louisville, Ky.
  
  June 20, the Brigade consisting of the Fourteenth, Fifteenth, and Thirty-second Illinois Regi ments, was transferred to the Department of the Missouri, and moved by boat to St. Louis. Her e orders were received dispatching the command to the far west via Fort Leavenworth. After eq uipping, marched from the latter place the 22d, and arrived August 13, at Ft. Kearney, Neb. , were telegraphic orders for muster out were received.  Reached Fort Leavenworth September 2 , and mustered out September 16, and paid off at Camp Butler.

  Notes for Clinton Leroy Alden:
  Clint worked many years at the Educational Music Bureau at 30E Adams in Chicago. At EMB, Clin t worked in the Small instrument department, repairing musical instruments. Clint has 2 birt h certificates - one was modified according to testimony by his sister, Cora, on 1/31/1942. A s best as I can tell, the only change was his mothers age.  When he died, Clint was living wi th Gertrude, Jessie and Joe in two flat at 759 S. Dobson, Chicago. His wake was held at Lai n & Son 2024 East 75th St. Chicago.

  David was a Carpenter. Moved to Windsor, Broome County, NY with his father in 1816. He live d in a rented house on Main St. in Windsor Village. He was in the Broome Co. census records f rom 1820-65 and in the 1870 Fulton Co, Il records with his son, Smith David Alden. No record s of his death or burial have been found.

  Notes for Charlotte D. Alden:
  Quotation from the November 1892 edition of "The Echo" published by the Windsor Academy Alumn i Association-
  
  "During the summer, Charlotte Alden, too, has passed away. She will be well remembered and es teemed by the older Alumni. Her unexpected death in Philadelphia was caused by blood-poison f rom a cut with glass on the back of her hand."
  
  In the December 1910 edition of the Echo, Charlotte was remembered in the reminiscences of th e old Windsor Grade school by Addison McKee (who attended the school). Mr. McKee wrote someth ing for each year. For 1850 and Charlotte Alden he wrote:
  
  "1850 - Miss Charlotte Alden. She was a young lady of pretty fair education, she was ambitiou s and quite skillful in various lines, such as painting in water colors, in which she gave le ssons, and in all kinds of fancy work, etc. She was a pretty fair looking young lady, and gav e one the impression of being a little self conscious in the matter of looks. She lived t o a good old age, dying in (about) 1897."
  
  It should be noted that it was the existence of Charlotte's will that allowed me to find al l of Charlottes siblings and to trace her to David Alden and Broome County. Without her will , there would be no link between Smith David Alden and the rest of the family.

  Gilead Alden was in Company G. 89th Regiment of NY State Volunteer Army. He was wounded cam e home and died. There is no date on his gravestone in in Windsor Village Cemetery (accordin g to Windsor Historian, Bernard Osborne). There is a Sons of the Revolution Gravemarker. He i s buried in Section 1, row 9, North End going south.   He was a carpenter.

  Israel served in the Revolutionary War from 9/19/1777 to 10/16/1777 (28 days). He was a priva te in Noah Lankstons company, Col. John Ashley's Regiment (Berkshire Co). He marched to Still water by order of Brig. Gen. Fellows.

  Rev. Noah Alden was received into the Congregational Church in Stafford Ct. 3/7/1742. He chan ged his religious beliefs and became a Baptist minister, being ordained at Stafford Ct. 6/5/1 755 and in Bellingham 11/12/1766. He was a member of the convention for adopting the constitu tion of Ma. He was one of four ministers who formed the Warren association in 1767. (a furthe r account of him can be found in the annals of the American Pulpit by Rev. Dr. Sprague)

  Joseph Alden admitted freeman in 1659; had his fathers propietary share in Bridgewater, wher e he settled in that part of town, (now West Bridgwater (as of 1891)) His will was dated 12/1 4/1696 and proved 3/10/1697 with his wife and son, John, as executors.

  "John Alden, ancestor of most persons bearing the name of Alden in this country was one of th e Plymouth Pilgrims, and the last male survivor of those who came in the May Flower and signe d the compact in her cabin in 1620. He was not of the Leyden Church, but as Bradford in "hist ory of Plymouth Plantation" informs us, was hired for a cooper at Southhampton, where the shi p victualled, and beign a hopeful young man, was much desired, but was left to his own likin g to go or stay when he came here, so stayed and married here. He was distinguished for pract ical wisdon, integrity and decision, and early influence ofer his associates. He was much emp loyed in public business, was an assistnt to the governor many years, andm in every positio n he occupied, fulfilled his duties promptly and to the satisfaction of his employers. So fa r as is known his ancestry in Englnad has not been traced. He was born in 1599, and died at D uxbury, September 12, 1687, in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was was gath ered to his people, and his sons buried him. He married in 1621, Priscilla, daughter of Mr. M olines or Mullins, who with his famliy came also in the "May Flower" and both died in Februar y succeeding their landing. Traditon represents Priscilla to have been very beautiful in he r youth, and JOhn also was a coely person, and considering his other accomplishments, it is n ot surprising that when he was sent by Capt. Standish, after the death of his wife, to solici t her hadn in marriage, she preferredn the messengett to the message:
  
  "But as he warmed and glowed, in his simple and eloquent language
  Quite forgetful of self, and full of the praise of his rival,
  Archly the maiden smiled, and, with eyes overrunning with laughter
  Said, in a tremulous voice, 'why don't you speak for yourself, John?"
  
  Their residence, after a few years, was in Duxbury, on the north side of the village, on a fa rm which is still in the possession of their descendants (as of 1891) of the seventh generati on.... ""
