There is a quote in the book from Garnett M. Riley concerning the original Riley's. Evidently they came over with Lafayette to fight in the Revolutionary War, and after the War, they settled in Culpepper, VA.
If you would like me to copy any of this information from the book in our local library, I will be happy to do so. But, there are not too many dates given. I would need your address since it is too much to E-mail.
Hope this helps you! Genealogy is so fascinating. It is like solving a big mystery!
Take care,
Carol Riley Ackley in KY

1. Thomas RILEY. Thomas died in 1827 in Cam!pbell Co. KY.
Thomas is reported to have come to America as a soldier under Gen. LaFayette during the American Revolutionary War with a brother in 1777 or 1779. After the war he settled in Culpepper Co. Va. and moved to Kentucky with his family in the 1790s, settling on what was later known as the Dee Riley farm on Bank Lick Creek in Campbell Co. KY.
Thomas' will is recorded at the Campbell Co. KY Courthouse, Will Book B, page 222. It reads as follows:
In the Name of God, Amen. I Thomas Riley being perfect in mind and knowing that I must resign my spirit to God who gave it amd my body to the earth from which it was made do constitute this my last will and testament as follows, viz"
Item 1st, Whereas my son John Riley when he was about seventeen years old when he left me in order to seek his fortune and therefore made himself of no benefit to me for the four years til he was of age to leave me and in consideration of a mare whi!ch I gave him after he was of age I do not by this will intend to give him nor his heirs anything more of my property.

NOTE BY JAMES RILEY IN HIS BOOK: In the above will of Thomas Riley, his son Jacob Riley was bequeathed 20 acres of land and was to inherit the 35 acres given his wife after her demise!. Jacob's son, Francis Marion Riley as known as "Dee" Riley. This was undoubtedly the farm referred to in Garnett Riley's statement that the original Riley brothers, after first settling in Culpepper County, VA, then moved to a farm in Kentucky on a hill above Bank Lick Creek in what was then Campbell Co. but is now Kenton Co. and is the farm now known as the "Dee Riley Farm". (To the witer, this has been one of the "missing links' of information tying the Family Tree together. jkr).
NOTE LINDA KAYE COPE LANIER: Much of the information for the descendants of Thomas Riley is found in an unbound book in the Boone County Kentucky Library entitled, "An Incomplete Genealogy of Thomas Riley Who Died in Campbell County, Kentucky in 1827, and Whose Descendants Lived in Boone, Campbell, and Kenton County, Kentucky for Several Generations" compiled and reproduced by by James K. Riley in 1970. Most of the information had been collected by his father, Edgar Carlisle Rile!y, Sr. (1883-1945). Other sources of information are Census Records, Tax Records, Marriage Records, Cemetery Records, "History of Short Creek Baptist Church", and the Barton Papers.
Thomas married Elizabeth [RILEY].
They had the following children:
2 i. John (~1782-1833)
3 ii. Thomas (1784-)
4 iii. Sally
5 iv. George
6 v. Jane
7 vi. Jacob (1801-1893)
8 vii. Susanna

The Rileys and Waymans must have moved to Campbell Co. KY from Culpepper Co.
VA between 1800 and 1810. John Riley is listed on the 1810 Campbell Co. KY.
The listing on that page of the census has Solomon Wayman, Aaron Waymon,
Harmon Waymon, Moses Wayman, and then John Reily. On the next page is
listed Thomas Reily. Some names listed on the page with Thomas Reily are
Martin Cowgill, William Pickett, Joseph Cowgill, Daniel Cowgill, Hames
Holeman, Joseph Harris, and Hudson Jones. In Thomas Riley's will part of
the property mentioned joined the "Cowgill" property.
Unfortunately, it will be very difficult to determine if they moved to
Kentucky before 1800 because the 1800 Virginia Census records were destroyed
in the War of 1812 and there was no 1800 Census taken for Kentucky. There
must be some records for a census there, but they are probably included in
Virginia.

I have nothing on William Callent just on his wife Martha Riley. But I do suspect that the Callents were part of a group that left the Germanna Colonies in VA and moved to KY. You can check these out it is one of those rootsweb Lists.(germanna_colonies). Here is what I have on the Rileys: Thomas b. abt 1760 settled in Culpeper Co.VA married an Elizabeth ? (might be Hume?) In the 1790's after the RW they moved to KY. There children were: John W, b. 1782 VA m. Frances Wayman, Thomas Jr. b1784 m. Sarah ?. , Sally b. abt 1798 m. Henry Casey, George m. Polly Ann ?, Jane married Beverley Jarrell, Jacob m. Mildred Huffman and Susanna never married. Going back to their son James Riley b. 1801 and his wife Elizabeth Vaughn that had Martha that married into the Callent family. Hope that answers your question .
