Martha was born about 1739 in ,of Goochland, VA.1 Martha's father was Edmund Hodges and her mother was Nephany Walker. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Hodges and Christian (Hodges); her maternal grandparents were John Walker and Mrs John Walker. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, David, Moses, Jesse, Susannah, Mary, Elizabeth and Agnes. She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.-
