Madoc ap was born about 1091 in of Montgomeryshire, Wales.1 Madoc ap's father was Maredudd ap Bleddyn and his mother was Hunydd verch Efnydd. His paternal grandparents were Bleddyn ap Cynfyn and Haer verch Cillin; his maternal grandparents were Efnydd ap Morien and Efa verch Llywelyn. He had a brother named Gruffydd ap. He died in 1160 in Winchester, Hampshire, England.1 General Notes

In 1149 Madog had allowed his neph ews, Owain and Meurig, to rule Cyfieliog as an appendage to the kingdom according to the cus tom of those times - never intending that the area should be separated from the kingdom of Po wys. When Madog's son, Gruffudd, succeeded his father, Owain was able to keep Cyfieliog and s ome adjacent areas for himself, leaving only northern Powys for Gruffudd. This split the kin gdom into two resulting in Powys' loss of generally equal status with the kingdoms of Gwyned d and Deheubarth.
