  In your email of 23 Jan 1998 - you made references to Colonial Families of the U.S.
  one of those references referred to John Bowie, Sr. who was mentioned in the will of John Smi th 23 sep 1707.
  Today I found. In Volume 17, number 3, Nov. 1985, page 39 of the Prince George County
  Genealogical Society Bulletin:
  Jonathan Prether, apparently Jane Smith's 1st husband, immigrated to MD in 1658 (Skordas p.37 2).  Her 2nd husband, John Smith, was the maternal uncle of John Bowie (Bowie Across the Year s, page 633ff).  Her apparent son, George Prater's will (1698) mentions his sister, Jane Moli kine, proving James Millikin's children to be Jane Smith's grandchildren (MCW 2:150).

  An undocumented report by a professional genealogist
  says he was born at Latton on the Eton River in Wiltshire England. Donna Warner of Atlanta Ga . copied research done by Eva Hampton Prather on file in theGa. Department of Archives and Hs itory and portions are quoted, "-- Jonathan Prather who came from his ancestral home of Latto n near Eton Water, Wiltshire, England and arrived in the Colony of Va in 1650--- ( he was on e of) three Prather brothers William , Samuel, and Jonathan. All of this is unsubstantiated , and must be discounted.\William had been an ensign in the British navy. He did not enjoy th e dangers and rough life of the colonists so he returned to England. Samuel and Jonathon mad e themselves a log cabin (and began to farm on the rich soil, trading tobacco for their need s with English shippers).  (After 8 years) Samuel suddenly died in 1658, and Jonathon , who h ad grown to manhood was left alone. (note! Others have shown that he was married in 1654 in V a.) Under the circumstances  he was resolved to remove from Va. to Md. --- where some friend s of his father's family now lived, for Thomas Sprigg, brother of Sir George Sprigg, had an a ssignment of 100 acres of land in the > Tidewater country near the border of Chesapeake Bay , when he employed the owner George reed, of a transport vessel plying in the Chesapeake to t ransport him and his household and farming equipment to Md. Reference. Land Commssioner's off ice Annapolis, liber 22, page 32; liber q folio202.
  It is believed that Jonathan and his wife, Jane, were married in Virginia.
  Jonathan, Sr. moved from Virginia to Maryland in 1658.\Jonathan and Jane were transported t o Calvert County, Maryland, in a small boat owned by George Reade of Calvert Couny.  On Swa n Creek, then in Calvert County (now in Prince Georges County), Maryland, they built their ho me.  The approximate location is near the present site of Ft. Washington on the east to west , from Ft. Washington Road, and is about 10 miles due south of the Capitol Building, Washingt on, D.C.  Since tobacco was the main money crop, it is assumed that Jonathan was a tobacco pl anter.  Jonathan was living on 100 acres he and Jane acquired in "His Lordship's Manor" whe n he died before August 21, 1680.  This 100 acres was claimed in 1684 by his and Jane's son , Jonathan Prather, Jr.  \When Jonathan died, he left Jane, his widow, with seven children .  She later married John Smith, a wealthy Englishman from London.  John had a fine plantatio n called Brook Field, located at Mattapany Landing on the Patuxent River, seven miles from th e present town of Upper Marlboro in Prince Georges County, Maryland.  Jane and John Smith ha d no children of their own, but John was a kind and generous stepfather to the Prather childr en.  It is interesting to note that Thomas Prather, the fourth child of Jonathan and Jane, i n appreciation of this kindness and generousity, named his second son John Smith Prather.  Th us began a long line of John Smith Prathers.  All of Jonathan's and Jane's children were bor n in Calvert County, Maryland.\Son Jonathan, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, had 11 children.  H is daughter Martha, married William Prather, Jr., the son of his brother, William, Sr. (see t heir Family Page).
  Their daughter Jane and her husband James Mulligan, Jr., had one son and three daughters. Jan e died before May 22, 1718.\George and his wife, Mary, had no children.\Concerning, William a nd his wife, Ann Yate, see their Family Page and the connection between their son and his bro ther, Jonathan's, daughter.\Thomas and Martha Sprigg Prather had four sons and two daughters .  Thomas died before March 15, 1711.\John and his wife, Katherine Swearingen Prather, had tw o sons and four daughters.  John died before december 20, 1718.\Nothing further is known abou t Elizabeth and Phillip Gettings.\Jonathan's wife, Jane, died circa 1713 at Brookfield Planta tion, in Prince Georges County, Maryland.
