Bullitt Co. Order Book G, Page 2: Monday 15 Oct 1838 Samuel Goldsmith satisfied this court t hat he is the owner of the land on which he lives on the north side of Salt River about 12 mi les by road below Shepherdsville he applied for a ferry to be established on his land acros s Salt River on his motion a ferry is established at said point across said River and said Sa muel Goldsmith is appointed ferry keeper. Thereup and therefor he excuted bond in the penal s um of $20. with Nelson Goldsmith as Security (who Justified an oath in court as to his abilit y) conditions agreeably to law and the court fee the folling rates as ferry at said point 4 w heel wagon and 2 hoarses $1. driver and 4 horses 75c driver and f2 horses 50c carts with 2 wh eels 50c 2 wheel carrier with one horse 37 1/2c single man 6 1/4c each horse 6 1/4c each hea d meat cattle 3c each sheep 2c ferry boat to be at least 40 feet long and 10 feet wide (he ra n the ferry until 1849)
The Early HIstory of West Point, page 135,136: Samuel Goldsmith was the son of a Virginia Rev olutioary War veteran, John Goldsmith, SR., and he settled sometime around 1821 near Pitts Po int, later moving to Indiana, and about 1834 he returned to Hardin County. He was a charte r member of Barker Lodge.
Dec. 12, 1821 Samuel Goldsmith bought 1200 acres on Salt River in Bullitt Co. about 3 or 4 mi les from the rolling Fork from John Loagan.
