  Charles Powell  & Elizabeth Jane Lane By Virginia Grant
  
       Charles Powell married Elizabeth Jane Lane, daughter
  of John Lane and Ann Martin, May 1, 1845 in Lancaster,
  Missouri.  Charles was a store keeper in Lancaster.  He
  also was a "Wheeler-Dealer" in land with his father and
  maybe his brothers.
       He and "Jane" had eleven children; three of which died
  in infancy. The last two sons were born in Iowa after the
  Civil War.  One was my grandpa Charles H. Powell.
       Charles and Jane farmed in Pottawattamie County, Iowa
  in Honey Creek and Boomer.  They are buried in Grange
  Cemetery, Neola, Iowa along with many others of the Powell
  family.  I am told there are 33 Powell graves together in a
  row on the top of the hill in that cemetery.
       To me Elizabeth Jane looks like a hard working little
  lady.  She looks very plain.  When my Grandpa Charles H.
  Powell talked about her, you could hear the love and
  respect for her in his voice.  I wish I could have known
  her.

  Mrs. Powell Buried Sunday
       Mrs. Jane Elizabeth Powell died at her home in Boomer
  township, eight miles west of Neola, last Friday at the age
  of 81 years, 10 months and 23 days.  She was married to
  Charles Powell at the age of 18 and in 1861 they moved to
  Iowa where they have lived since.  She united with the
  Baptist Church when 15 years of age and was a faithful
  member until her death.
       She was the mother of 11 children, 8 of whom are now
  living.  They are John H., Mrs. E. Riley, Mrs. Joseph
  Welbourn, Mrs. Martha Thomas, William J., Dike, Charles and
  Richard.
       Funeral services were held Sunday from the Church at
  Boomer Center and were conducted by Rev. Lewis of Neola.
  The ceremony was attended by a large number of friends, and
  the entire community extends sympathy to the family in
  their bereavement.
