Living together in 1841 Relative of: Illigitimate daughter of Elizabeth Woods Lives with: Elizabeth (3mo) lived with her grandparents in 1841 Lives with: In 1851, after James had died, Elizabeth Mather lived with her mother Martha at Bedford Row, Turton Neighbor: In 1841, John and Henry were nearby at Butterworths and Bedford Row, Turton.

It was probably this John Mather (55, labourer) at Butterworths, Turton labouring for Benjamin and Sarah Mayoh, farmers.
Butterworths is NE of Bedford Row, Egerton where his brother Henry and family were living. Lives with: Ann and her mother probably lived with William Mather. They are both recorded as living at Lower Lane, Haslingden. Relative of: John Wood has a 8cM DNA match to me (and other Mather connections) and it must be via this John Wood of Astley Bridge born Q1/1849, since John Wood emigrated to Australia and married there. The GRO record shows his mother as SINGLETON and there are WOOD+SINGLETON births from 1838 (and before) to 1843 in Halliwell, and then untill 1853 in Sharples. Know each other: Possible brothers as both from Hayfield and both lived in Haslingden district. Lives with: In 1851, Alice (23, dau-in-law) was staying with William and Fanny Roberts (her mother) at Newchurch. ~1798 - 1859 Mary Chadwick 61 61 Charles's birth shows mothers name formerly Chadwick.  However, there is no Mather+Chadwick marriage.  The 1824 marriage to Mary Howarth seems more likely, except this Mary is from Oldham.  Perhpas this is the Mary Chadwick who married Thomas Howarth at Todmorden in 1821.

In 1851, Mary (53, born Wigan) was with William (22, b. Manchester) and Henry and Caroline (20 & 15, mborn Turton) visiting Henry Blackledge at the Cotton Mill in Yorkshire St Paul, East Sculcoates.
1825 - 1848 James Mather 23 23 In 1841, both James Mather and Elizabeth Stevens families were living at Bedford Row, Egerton.

27 April 1845, James Mather, spinner of Egerton, son of Henry Mather, a Dyer married Elizabeth Stevens, daughter of Joseph Stevens at St. Peter, Bolton

By 1851, James hed died.  The only death registered is at Tottington, North Bury in 1848.  By 1851, Elizabeth was back with her mother at Turton Row.
1827 William Mather There are 5 Williams of this age from Bolton on the 1841 census.

In 1851, Mary (53), William, Henry and Caroline (22, 20 & 15) were visiting Henry Blackledge (40) in East Sculcoates, Yorkshire.
1829 Henry Mather In 1851, Henry ("Hy", 20, Married) was with his mother Mary Mather (53) and two siblings visiting Henry Blackledge (40) at East Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

The Henry, son of Hanry that married in Deane in 1862 is another, a miner from Little Hulton.
1835 - 1863 Caroline Mather 28 28 In 1841, Caroline (5) was the yongest of the family, living at Bedford Row, Turton (not on Ancestry index).

In 1851, Mary (53), William, Henry and Caroline (22, 20 & 15) were visiting Henry Blackledge (40) in East Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

In Q4 1859, Caroline married Thomas Bingham (not Charles Hilton) Sculcoates Register Office, Yorkshire East Riding (SRO/8/124).  They had a son Frederick William Bingham born Q1-1863 at Bourn and baptised 1-Feb-1863 at Langtoft, Lincoln.  Caroline died in April, two months after giving birth. No family trees to confirm !
1775 - 1855 Catherine Pilkington 80 80 In 1841, Catherine Jepson (65) was in Waterloo, Little Bolton. She has Ann, Betty and Edward Pilkington (33 & 14 & 4) with her, as well as Nehemiah Crook, Fanny Crook (nee Piklington) and Joseph Crook (45 & 40 & 20).  Sarah Mather (35) with Ann and John (10 & 1) and Thomas and Mary Grundy were about 4 doors away, Samuel and Alice Mather and family were another 6 doors further on. 1771 - 1833 James Jepson 62 62 ~1771 Betty Midwood ~1800 Fanny Pilkington 1794 - 1869 Nehemiah Crook 75 75 Nehemiah died in the Union Workhouse, St James New Bury in 1869 1820 Joseph Crook 1800 - 1820 Ann Rosthorn 20 20 1753 Thomas Mather From Town, Haslingden in 1753 when baptised.

Thomas's parents later lived at Lower Lane, Haslingden, and this is where he was living in 1778 when son William was baptised.  His siblings William and Anne were also at Lower Lane when their children were baptised in 1872 and 1875.
1755 Ann (Nancy) Tunnadine From Haslingden in 1778 when son William was baptised.

Nancy was originally a diminutive form of Anne or Ann, so Nancy may be Ann (as no Thomas and Nancy marriage).
1723 - 1790 Abraham Mather 67 67 Abraham was born 1723 at Church Hill, Haslingden, son of John a feltmaker and Martha.

Another Abraham Mather married Grace Topper at Great Harwood (7 miles NNW)  19 July 1746. It cant be this Abraham, as the baptism records of his children (starting 1744) name the mother as Ann.

In 1775, Sarah, daughter of Abraham and Lydia (not Ann) was born. It must be the same Abraham as abode is Lower Lane, Haslingden, and Abraham's son Abraham is too young to be a father. There is no record of a marriage or death of Lydia, so it is assumed Lydia and wife Ann are the same person.

In 1790, Anne and Abraham (of Town) both died in April, two weeks appart
~1726 - 1790 Anne Barns 64 64 Although Anne for most of the Children's baptisms including Abraham's at Lower Lane in 1763, by 1775 Sarah Mather was baptised "Daughter of Abraham Mather & Lydia" of Lower Lane.  Lydia is his second wife.

1755 William Mather William Mather (Madder on the early baptism records) was from Lower Lane (or Town Lane after 1790), Haslingden.

After 1796, the family appear to have moved away from Hasslingden (no marriages or death for any of the children).  They probably stayed nearby in Turton where Henry is buried.

William possibly died in Droylsden, Manchester (about 20 miles South of Haslingden).
1750 - 1753 Abraham Mather 3 3 1744 - 1745 John Mather 1 1 1763 Abraham Mather The Abraham that died in 1775 was born 1774, the son of Abraham and Alice (not Anne), so a different person.

Possibly moved to Droysted, Manchester and married Elizabeth Swindells in 15 May 1796 (unconfirmed)
1758 Anne Mather Anne of Lower Lane, Haslingden, had a daughter Anne baptised 17 Jan 1782.  No father was named. 1748 James Mather 1755 - 1831 Margaret (Peggy) Ashworth 76 76 Margaet was the daughter of Elizabeth Ashworth, a spinster of Cribben-side, Haslingden and Samuel Whitley, a Mason of Saddleworth.

In 1756, Margaret married William Mather with the consent of parents, so under age   However, they had no children baptised and it appears William left her.

Margared Ashworth (not Mather) was buried in Haslingden in 1831, aged 77.
1778 - 1819 William Mather 41 41 This is probably the William Mather on the 1811 Little Bolton Poor Assessment List, with a rented house at "Bottams" (possibly Turton Bottoms)

William, son to Thomas and Nancy Mather was baptised at Haslingden
~1690 - 1756 John (Old Hatter) Mather 66 66 Before 1723, there are no marriage or baptism records for John.  It is likely he married Martha had a son John baptised elsewhere (possibly Bury or Bolton).

In 1729 (indexed 1730), when James was baptised the record shows John was a Hatter.

In 1739 (if Martha had died) John remarried Mary Fielding. However there is a death record for Martha in 1749.  Therefore it is likely to be John's son and both are hatters.

In Dec 1756, John, a labourer (aka The Old Hatter) of Haslingden died.
~1700 - 1749 Martha Mather 49 49 1725 Thomas Mather 1793 - 1794 Nancy Mather 1 1 1787 John Mather This is not the John Mather at Butterworths, Turton in 1841 & 1851 1785 Thomas Mather 1780 Anne Mather 1777 Elizabeth (Betty) Mather Betty was probably poor as in the Workhouse (which can act as a hospital) when Nancy (and possibly Peggy) baptised. 1782 James Mather ~1777 <unknown> 1798 - 1873 Nancy Mather 75 75 Nancy, daughter of Betty Mather of Workhouse was born 1799 and baptised at Aiinsworth.  This could be Elizabeth's child.

31 Dec 1820, William Wood(s) married Nancy Mather at Haslingden.
1799 William Woods 31 Dec 1820, William Wood(s) married Nancy Mather at Haslingden.

Befor the 1841 census, William and Nancy Woods were at Sheep Green, Haslingden.  William was a Mason or a Mason's labourer or most often simply a labourer.

In 1841, William and Nancy (both 40) where at Rake Foot, Haslingden with Betty (21), Margaret (16), Mary Ann (10), John (6), and Susannah (3 and/or 9mo).

In 1851, William and Nancy (50 & 50) were lodgers at Shop Green, Haslingden with Samuel and Betty Brooks
1829 Peggy (Margaret) Woods 1838 Susannah Woods Susannah was an illegitimate child of Nancy Woods 1822 Betty Woods 1835 John Woods 1834 - 1834 Thomas Woods 1m 1m Thomas was the third Thomas baptised (they all died as infants) 1840 Susannah Woods 1833 - 1891 William Ramsden 58 58 1832 Elizabeth Swinby From Sharples when married in 1853 1860 Thomas Ramsden 1856 Martha Ramsden 1864 William Ramsden 1871 Mary Jane Ramsden 19 March 1898, Mary Jane Ramsden married Edward Seddon at Blackrod 1862 - 1893 Ida C Ramsden 30 30 1861 - 1867 Mary E Ramsden 6 6 1868 - 1870 Jane Ramsden 2 2 1875 - 1877 Samuel Ramsden 2 2 1801 - 1877 Joseph Ramsden 76 76 From 1832-35 Joseph, a weaver, and Martha lived in Bradshaw.

In 1839 and 1840, when sons Joseph and Samuel were baptised they had moved down the road to Harwood.  Both  birth registrations show the mother as HASLAM.

in 1841, Joseph and Martha (40 & 38) were at Riding Gate, Harwood Tonge with Haulgh.

In 1851, son John was born (a late arrival). The birth was registered in Turton with mother's maiden name confirmed as HASLAM.

In 1855, "John son of Joseph" died aged 4 at Breightmet.
1803 - 1874 Martha Haslam 71 71 in 1841, Joseph and Martha (40 & 38) were at Riding Gate, Harwood, Tonge with Haulgh. 1825 John Ramsden 1826 James Ramsden 1828 Thomas Ramsden 1848 - 1849 Henry Mather 11m 11m 1850 - 1940 Harriet Mather 89 89 In 1881 and 1891, Harriet was still singlke, still with her mother Eliza and sister Charlotte in Glossop Dale, Derbyshire 1852 - 1856 Samuel Mather 3 3 1852 - 1906 Charlotte Mather 53 53 1857 - 1938 Eliza Mather 81 81 1823 - 1856 John Mather 33 33 Son Francis's birth was registered at Hayfield, Derbyshire in 1845.  Therefore, the June 1884 marriage there between a MATHER and Elizs is likely to be this person, ie. John Mather.

In Q2/1844, John Mather married Eliza Platt at Hayfield, Derbyshire.
1815 - 1892 Eliza Platt 77 77 Father Anthony Platt, Joiner

In 1861, Eliza (46, born Marple Bridge) was living in Newchurch, Haslingden with Francis (16), Mary (14), Harriot (10), Charlotte (8) and Eliza (4)
1846 Mary Mather 1845 - 1922 Francis Mather 77 77 1857 - 1933 William Coxon 76 76 1853 Henry Hodge 1851 - 1938 Joseph Dawson 87 87 1856 - 1930 Eliza Ann Ellis 74 74 1832 - 1834 Charles Mather 1 1 Charles Mather of Morton Row, Turton is buried at Walmsley Chapel (Presbyterian), aged 1yr and 11 months. 1835 Priscilla Ramsden 1838 Joseph Ramsden 1851 - 1855 John Ramsden 4 4 1840 Samuel Ramsden 1826 Elizabeth Stevens Stevens when married in 1845, but Stephens when the childrens births were registered (1845-46)

In 1841, Elizabeth was a Bedford Row, Egerton, Turton with her parents Joseph and Martha and 5 siblings. The census  suggests she may have had a brother William married to Charlotte with a daughter Elizabeth Stevens (2mo).  The family were not from Lancashire.

By 1851, Elizabeth Mather, 25 was a Widow, living with her mother Martha. She had no children.

In 1861, Elizabeth had married James Rothwell, and they had a daughter Elizabeth (3).  They were living with Elizabeth's mother at 236 Halliwell Road, Little Bolton.

James and his father were both Stone Masons 1857 Elizabeth Rothwell 1797 - 1843 Henry Mather 45 45 Henry was from Haslingden and may have lived in  Manchester which is where he probably married Mary and is where son WIlliam was born.

In 1832, Henry and Mary had a son Charles baptisd at Walmsley, Turton, abode "Top of the Lane".  Charles died in 1834, aged 1yr, 11mo abode "Morton Row, Turton".

In 1841, Henry and Mary (both 40) were at Bedford Row, Egerton, Turton with with James (15), William (14), Henry (12) and Caroline (5).

In 1843, Henry died and in 1851, and Mary (53, Widow) was visiting Henry Blackledge (40) in Yorkshire with her three children William, Henry and Caroline (22, 20 & 15)

They appear to be a family, but no Bolton marriage exists so probably married at Prestwich on 23 May 1824.

~1730 Alice Cowp 30 Jan 1830, James Mather married Alice, both of Haslingden.  Is she also a Mather?  Other spouses include maiden name, but only "Alice" is shown for James's wife on the Bishop's Transcript.  One the Parish record however, she is Alice Cowp. 1752 Mary Mather 1756 Martha Mather 1760 Alice Mather 1762 - 1829 James Mather 67 67 ~1720 Mary Fielding 1720 John Mather John's father, also John was also a hatter, known as "The Old Hatter" so perhaps this John was "The Young Hatter".

15 May 1739, John married Mary Fielding.  They has a son John baptised 24 Feb 1740 when living at Lower Water Foot.
1739 John Mather 28 Aug 1775, This John Mather possibly married Anne Spencer at Haslingden.

The following month there is a baptism for John, son of John and Alice of Higher Lane, Haslingden.  This may be John Mather (Widower from Ratcliffe) who married Alice Bridge at Bury in 1762 (and died in 1788)
1730 - 1754 Isabel Barns 23 23 Isabel was born and baptised in 1830 at Haslingden, the daighter of Henry Barnes of Slats.  Her mother was probably Anne (as an earlier Isabel was baptised in 1725).

In 1752, Isabel had an illegitimate child, Henry, named after her father.  James Mather was the father.

May 1754, Isobel Barnes, Spinster died at Haslingden.

Another Isobel Barns of Haslingden married John Kay 1 Aug 1754 at St James, Haslingden, so perhaps this Isobel (with a son Henry) survived.  However, there was consent of parents to this other isobel was a minor.
1752 Henry Barns Baptised 10 Jan 1752, Henry Barns was the illegitimate son of Isabel Barns, a spinster and James Mather of Haslingden.

The same month as Henry was baptised, James Mather married  Alice Cowp.

<unknown> 1782 Ann Mather Ann was the illegitimate daughter of Ann Mather from Lower Lane, Haslingden, born Jan 1782 1775 Sarah Mather In 1775, Sarah, daughter of Abraham and Lydia (not Anne) was born. It must be the same Abraham as abode is Lower Lane, Haslingden, and Abraham's son Abraham is too young to be a father.

There is no record of a marriage or death of Lydia, so it is possible Lydia and wife Anne are the same person.  Otherwise Sarah may be an illegitimate child of Abraham and a younder woman, Lydia.

30 Jan 1752 (or 1751), James Mather married Alice Cowp at Haslingden.  This was just 3 weeks after his illegitimate son Henry Mather was baptised.  The son was baptised Mather, even though they were not married, so maybe Alice too him in as hers!

1752-1760, James was a weaver at Under Hutchbank when Mary and Alice were baptised.  By 1762 he was at Troy in the Grange.

James was a widower when he married Hannah Howarth.  The only other "Manchester" marriage within 10 years for James is for Esther Mason, the previous year, but this isnt it.  James and Esther continued to have their family in over Darwen past the 1762 second marriage.  The 1752 Haslingden marriage of James Mather and Alice Cowp is therefore another option.

James and Hannah's daughter Mary was baptised at Bank Street, and the abode is recorded as Turton.  This indicated James is of the Turton Presbyterian Mather family.

In 1816 and 1819, Jane and Sarah were baptised at Manchester Cathederal. Abraham was a labourer, then a slater.

It then appears that Abraham became a multiple biggamist, marrying two (or more) widows.

There are two Edmund deaths at Newchurch in Rossendale.  His son was buried 13 Jan 1824 (with both parents named), and then Edmund himself 15 Dec 1830 (agd 34 so born 1796)
