James Mather

James was born in 1809 in Hindley and his baptism took place on October 27th, 1811 at St. Mary (Deane).¹²

  There is another James Mather baptism at Walmsley they day after John and Ann married, but this must be another:

James' father was John Mather and his mother was Ann Coup. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Wright, Betty, Jane and Mary. He was the oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 51 in January 1860 in Little Bolton. His burial was on January 10th, 1860 in Bolton.³⁴

  James was baptised 27 Oct 1811 at St Mary's Deane. There is no matching adult death for James, unless he was born earlier. James may have been born about 1810 before his parents married.
  
  He cant be the James illegitamate son of Ann Mather of Turton, born 16 Apr 1811 (the day after they married) and baptised 25 May 1811 as the death age doesn't match.
  
  In 1841, Jane Banks (60), was head (listed first), assumed to be Margaret's mother, living at Back Barry Row, Turton. James and Margaret Mather were both 30. Also present were Elizabeth Horrox (i.e. Horrocks), aged 35 with Banks Horrox (9) and Edwin Horrox (1). Holt Mather lived here in 1851.
  
  In 1851, James, now a Stripper and Grinder, and Margaret Mather (both 52) were at 9 Baton Street, Little Bolton with sister-in-law Ellen Banks (28) and nephews Joseph and Walter Banks (5 & 3).
