Holt Mather

Holt was born in 1809 in Turton and his baptism took place about 1804 at Walmsley Presbyterian.¹

  From 3-Oct-1794 to Oct-1815 the Walmsley Meeting House records are missing. However, with "Holt" as a given name it is reasonable to assume this is a son of William Mather and Betty Holt, probably baptised at Walmsley. However, Betty would be almost 50 when Holt was born.

Holt's father was William Mather and his mother was Betty Holt. His maternal grandparents were Peter Holt and Elizabeth (Betty) Howarth. He had three brothers and a sister, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Joshua, James, William, Alice and <unknown>. He was the youngest of the six known children. He died about 1856 in Turton.

  Possibly Holt was Thomas, known as Holt. There is only one Mather death between 1851 and 1861 of correct age.

- Holt is a possible son of William Mather and Betty Holt.
  Family on IGI Index and 1851 census. However Betty almost 50 in 1809.
  
  1828-1837: Holt and Alice were living in Egerton when Thomas and Mary were born.
  
  About 1838 Holt and Alice moved to Leigh where Ellen was baptised, and than back to Walmsey, Turton whee Maria was baptised in 1845
  
  In 1841, Holt and Alice (both 34) were at the Old Globe, (Egerton), Bolton with 5 children: Thomas (13), Mary (11), Rosanne (9), Sevine (7), Ellen (5). NOTE: Information from FindMyPast and Lanc-OPC project as unavailable on Ancestry.co.uk. Old Globe is by Cox Green, Egerton (opposite Mather Fold). Old Globe Cottages BL7 9RB are on Cox Green Road (see 1844 Egerton map).
  
  28 Mar 1847, Holt Mather was a wtness to the marriage of John Heywood (labourer of Sharples) and Ellen Hamer (Widow of Sharples, dau of Joseph Lever).
  
  In 1851, Holt and Alice (42 & 43) were at 33 Barry Row, Egerton, Turton with son Thomas and his wife Mary Ann (22 & 20) and five daughters; Mary, Rossania, Ellen, Alice and Maria (20, 17, 13, 8 & 6)
  
  "Holt Mather" is shown as the father on Thomas's marriage of 1850. However, Holt may have used another name as there in no death registered fot Holt, and no other records after 1851.
  
  In 1851, the family may have moved to Staffordshire, Mary, daughterr of Holt married Thomas Vickers there.
