Individual Picture Notes
- One of the first pages of the Walmsley Chapel Meeting House (Presbyterian) is dominated by two Mather families, William+Ann and Peter+Ellin. These two families were to be the grandparents of Samuel Mather (1791-1854) and Alice Mather (1792-1879) who married 9 September 1810. Therefore Samuel and Alice (the parents of John Mather) were second cousins.

William was born in 1750 in Turton and his baptism took place on August 29th, 1762 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by minister John Aspinal.¹

General Notes
- William was at Goose Cote Hill in 1792 when Alice was baptised. The farm here would later become a workhouse.
  
  17 Jun 1779, William Mather, a weaver, married Alice Holt. Their witness was John Knowles. This is probably the John (born 1746) son of John and Alice Knowles of Turton, who was a similar age.
  
  There is a gap of 13 years, where William and Betty may have had children.
  
  In 1792, William Mather and Betty (nee Holt) has a daughter Alice.
  
  WILLIAM MATHERS. born TURTON, Lancashire, Served in 52nd Foot Regiment; 9th Foot Regiment; Royal Marines, and was discharged aged 40 (See National Archives Kew)
