Joseph, known as Joshua, was born in 1778 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on June 21st, 1778 at St. Stephens (Astley).1 2 Birth Notes
Probably son of William and Betty, but no baptism recordds for their family (except for Alice in 1792). However, family lived around Kay Street Area (next to Waterloo), Little Bolton.

We know Joseph and John were brothers because thay both had daughters named Betsy, and in 1881 the same informant, Joseph Allen, recorded both their deaths.
Joseph was born in Tyldsley or Tong in 1778 and baptised at Astley, St Stephen.
Joshua (and Jesus) are alternative early names for Joseph. It appears then in 1805, he used the name Joshua, not Joseph to have is daughter Elizabeth baptised. (The only UK Joshua and Mary marriage was in Derbyshire in 1789 and that Joshua was still there in 1841, aged 70).
In 1841, Joseph (63), Thomas (40) and John (38), all weavers were at Kay Street. Mary Mather (possibly a sister-in-law) was 60. His great nephew John Heaton (7) was living with them.
In 1851 Joseph and Mary (both 73) were at 97 Kay Street, Little Bolton with sons Thomas (52) and John (50).
From 1861 Joseph's son John became a Hair Cutter and moved up the road with Joseph from 97 to 204 Kay St. Joseph Mather was also recorded as a Barber in the trade directory.
In 1871, Joseph's son John was a Hairdresser at 2 Simpson Street which is probably where Joseph died in 1864. Our other Mather family also lived at Simpson Street and Coopers Square (see map).
