He died due to Alzheimer's disease, Debility, at the age of 60 on August 4th, 1842 in Manchester. His burial was on August 7th, 1842 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²³

  John Mather, Machine Maker/Mechanic/Engineer, appears to have died 4 Aug.1842 at The Workhouse, Market St., Manchester, Mechanic, died of debility, aged 60. Ann (Thompson) Mather, born about 1791 in Runcorn, Cheshire, is listed in the Census 1841-1871 and died 22 Dec. 1875 in Manchester, aged 92 [age 70 in 1861 and 81 in the 1871 Census]. Ann and other family members are buried in Cheetham Hill Cemetery.

  In 1810, John Mather, mechanic, married Mary Taylor at Leigh. His brother Joseph and (assumed) brother James Mather were witness. (Sir William Mather was also a machine maker at Salford in 1836)
  
  We know John and Joseph were brothers because thay both had daughters named Betsy, and in 1881 the same informant, Joseph Allen, recorded both their deaths.
  
  13 May 1816, John Mather, Machine Maker, married Ann Thompson.
  
  In 1821, John Mather, mechanic was listed at 35 Canal Street in the Manchester Business Directory.
  
  In 1841, John Mather (a Mechanic) and Ann (both 50) were in were living in Back Hadfield St, Ancoats, Manchester with daughters Martha and Ellen (9 & 8). John was listed at 27 Dean Street, Great Ancoats as a Mechanic in the 1841 Pigot & Slater's Directory of Manchester & Salford.
  
  In 1850, John Mather, Mechanic is listed in Slater's directory at Ordsal Lane, Salford, which must be another if he died in 1841 (or else he died later).
  
  In 1842, John died at the Manchester Workhouse (aged 60). A burial records his abode as Little Bolton, aged 58.
  
  Later records (after his death) also show another John as an Iron Fitter and Engineer.

  From 1810 to after 1819 his occupation was Machine Maker in Little Bolton.

    - Jno (John) was a Machine Maker in Little Bolton when Sarah Ann, Thomas and Joseph were baptised. He had moved to Manchester by 1821, but still a Machine Maker.
  From 1819 to after 1823 his occupation was Machine Maker in Manchester.

    - Still a Machine Maker when twins Jane and Joseph and sons, John baptised in 1832
  From 1810 his occupation was Engineer & Mechanic & Iron Fitter in Manchester. He died in 1842 while still employed there.
  - Occupation Notes
    - In 1843, John was a Mechanic when Sarah Ann Married, later in 1849, John was an Engineer when his son John Married and on 1841 census.
      
      Was also recorded as a mechanic when Elizabeth married in 1858 and on daughter Martha's 1849 adult baptism (when she was 66).
      
      Thomas recorded his father as an "Iron Fitter" when his mother Ann died in 1875
