Thomas Mather

Thomas was born in 1798 in Little Bolton and his christening took place on March 4th, 1798 at St. Peter's (Bolton).¹

Thomas' father was Joseph (Joshua) Mather and his mother was Mary Thorp. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Holt. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Joseph, Betsy, Sarah and Hannah. He was the oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 81 in March 1879 in Bolton. His burial was on March 21st, 1879 at the St. James (New Bury).²³

- Cant fint in 1861, so may have died 1851-1861. However, the only matching death is in 1879.
  
  There is a Thomas Mather, Cotton Weaver in 1861 and 1871, boarding at 208+210 Picks Lane, Bolton, so this could be him !

General Notes
- In 1841 Joseph (63), Thomas (40) and John (38) were all weavers at Kay Street. Mary Mather (60) was listed seperately (after John Heaton), so may be Joseph's sister.
  
  In 1851, Joseph and Mary his wife (both 73), Thomas (52) and John (50), all still hand loom weavers at 97 Kay Street, Little Bolton.
  
  In 1861, Thomas was not with his father and brother John, so had possibly died. However, the only matching death record in in 1879, so he may have married Ellen Walkden in 1857 or Jane Dobson in 1858 (both RO). He may have been boarding with John and Hannah Hilton (63, Thomas, Silk Hand Loom Weaver, born L.B. but recorded as a Hilton)
  
  In 1871, Thomas was 73, Unmarried, and a boarder at 210 Pikes Lane, West Bolton, a "Cotton Weaver at Home"
  
  Thomas of Western Bolton died in March 1879, aged 81. He is buried at New Bury Churchyard (near Farnworth), South of Bolton.
