Walter was born in March 1866 in Halliwell.1  Walter's father was Wright Mather and his mother was Sarah Powell.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. He had a brother and five sisters, named John, Eliza, Eliza, Mary, Emma and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 40 on April 14th, 1906.  He was buried in April 1906 at Christ Church, Egerton (Bolton).2
