Emma was born in April 1864 in Chorley.1  Emma's father was Wright Mather and her mother was Sarah Powell.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Walter, John, Eliza, Eliza, Mary and Sarah.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
