John was born in 1843 in Everton.1  John's father was Charles Ambro Stephenson and his mother was Elizabeth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Jane Patterson. He had a brother and two sisters, named Charles, Jane and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
