Richard's father was James Crompton and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather. His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. He had two brothers and five sisters, named James, William, Alice, Ellen, Jane, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
