Mary was born in March 1854 in Bolton.1  Mary's father was James Crompton and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Richard, Alice, Ellen, Jane and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
