James was born in 1836 in Bolton.1  James' father was James Crompton and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. He had two brothers and five sisters, named William, Richard, Alice, Ellen, Jane, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
