Jane was born in June 1848 in Bolton.1  Jane's father was James Crompton and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Richard, Alice, Ellen, Elizabeth and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
