Richard was born in July 1755 in Little Lever and her baptism took place on July 20th, 1755 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Richard's father was John Thornley and her mother was Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William (Guliolius) Mather and Abiagail Duckworth. She had three sisters named Margaret, Mary and Ann.  She was the oldest of the four children.
