Margaret was born in June 1758 in Little Lever and her baptism took place on July 2nd, 1758 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Margaret's father was John Thornley and her mother was Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William (Guliolius) Mather and Abiagail Duckworth. She had three sisters named Richard, Mary and Ann.  She was the second oldest of the four children.
