Thomas' father was James Rawsthorn and his mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, William, Mary, Mary and Ruth.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Richard, John, Samuel, Ellen and Hannah.
