Thomas was born in 1822 in Breightmet and his baptism took place on February 3rd, 1822 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Thomas' father was James Rawsthorn and his mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, William, Mary, Mary and Ruth.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Ellen.
