John's father was Richard France and his mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Samuel, Ellen and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, William, William, Mary, Mary and Ruth.  He died as an infant at 9 months old in March 1841 in Little Bolton.²
