Mary was born in 1824 in Breightmet and her baptism took place on April 11th, 1824 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Mary's father was James Rawsthorn and her mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, William, Mary and Ruth.  She was the second oldest of the six children. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Richard, John, Samuel, Ellen and Hannah.
