Ellen was born in 1836 in Little Bolton and her baptism took place on May 1st, 1836 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Ellen's father was Richard France and her mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. She had three brothers and a sister, named Richard, John, Samuel and Hannah.  She was the oldest of the five children. She had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, William, William, Mary, Mary and Ruth.
