William was born in 1829 in Breightmet and his baptism took place on June 14th, 1829 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  William's father was James Rawsthorn and his mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Mary, Mary and Ruth.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Richard, John, Samuel, Ellen and Hannah.
