Richard was born in June 1838 in Little Bolton.¹

Richard's father was Richard France and his mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Samuel, Ellen and Hannah.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, William, William, Mary, Mary and Ruth.  He died at the age of 2 in December 1840 in Little Bolton.¹
