Ruth's father was James Rawsthorn and her mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, William, Mary and Mary.  She was the youngest of the six children. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Richard, John, Samuel, Ellen and Hannah.
