Betty was born in 1831 in Chorley and her baptism took place on May 10th, 1830 at St. Laurence (Chorley).1 2  Betty's father was James Mellor and her mother was Ellen Mellor. She had a brother and a sister, named James and Ellen.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
