Jane was born in 1821 in Bolton and her baptism took place there on October 21st, 1821.1 2  Jane's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Morris.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. She had two brothers and a sister, named John, Wright and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the four children.

‌Jane and John were married in a religious ceremony on September 21st, 1856 in Manchester.3  They had a son named John.
