Jane was born in October 1821 in Bolton and her baptism took place on October 21st, 1821 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Jane's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Morris.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. She had two brothers and a sister, named John, Wright and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the four children.
