Ethel's father was Thomas Marsh and her mother was Mary Ann Flitcroft. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Hartley Marsh and Mary Mather. She had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Stanley and Doris. She was the oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 50 in October 1942 in Southport.³
