Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Esther Dewhurst. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Mort. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named William, John, Alice, Sarah, Ann, Ellen, Ellen, Jane and Betsy. She had an adopted brother named William. She died at the age of 24 in March 1869 in Bolton.²
