James was born on March 21st, 1817 in Pendleton and his baptism took place on August 31st, 1817 in Eccles.1 2  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Ann Worsley. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, Harriet and Ann.  He was the youngest of the five children.
