James was born in September 1854 in Bolton.1  James' father was John Lee and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Betty (Elizabeth) Morris. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Nancy, Betsy, Ellen and Sarah. He had an adopted sister named Mary.
