Gertrude's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Hannah Greenhalgh.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. She had two sisters named Amy and Florence.  She was the second oldest of the three children.  She died at the age of 5 in January 1900 in Bolton.²
