Sarah was born in 1868.  Sarah's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Jane Caldwell.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Mary Cunliffe. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Paul, Harold, Lily and Florence.  She was the oldest of the six known children.
