Frederick's father was John Mather and his mother was Lelitia (Loah) Crankshaw. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Edwin, Alfred, John, William, Mary, Elizabeth and Mary. He had a foster brother named Edwin. Frederick and William were twins. He died at the age of 1 in 1865 in Little Bolton.¹
