John was born in 1837 in Pendleton.1  John's father was Robert (Thomas) Mather and his mother was Mary Ann Walmsley.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Worsley. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Robert, James, George, Edwin, Julia, Maria and Harriet.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
