Julia was born in 1830 in Salford and her baptism took place on September 5th, 1830 at Manchester Cathedral.1 2  Julia's father was Robert (Thomas) Mather and her mother was Mary Ann Walmsley.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Worsley. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Robert, James, George, Edwin, Maria and Harriet.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
