Julia's father was Robert (Thomas) Mather and her mother was Mary Ann Walmsley. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Worsley. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Robert, James, George, Edwin, Maria and Harriet. She was the second oldest of the nine children.
