Robert was born in 1839 in Pendleton and his baptism took place on May 19th, 1839 in Manchester.1 2  Robert's father was Robert (Thomas) Mather and his mother was Mary Ann Walmsley.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Worsley. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, James, George, Edwin, Julia, Maria and Harriet.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
